OUR 2016 EARTHQUAKE SURVIVOR SURVEY INCLUDING

THE SERVICES THEY NEEDED AND WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE

We collaborated with the Department of Statistics of Nepal to scientifically design and execute a survey of the earthquake survivors themselves to see how they were surviving 6 months after the disaster, compared to the most recent census.

We also asked them what information they most needed to

improve their ability to survive, which we then provided in special seminars.

ONE YEAR AFTER THE CATASTROPHIC EARTHQUAKE

We surveyed 411 households that were widely dispersed in settlements up to a couple of hours apart up the Himalayan mountain trails. The survey was conducted in the HILL REGION of Nepal, which has "Middle Mountains" (which would be considered massive anywhere else), and Deep Valleys.

Some of the settlements we reached were up to two hours apart up and down steep mountain trails. It was dangerous work. We had to provide life insurance for our specially trained survey teams.

As far as we know, it was the only scientifically designed survey of the survivors themselves that asked them about their actual living conditions with questions that could be directly compared to their living conditions at the time of the previous census.

We also asked them how long they could continue to meet their basic needs in their current living situations, and what information would help them the most with the challenges they were facing in their lives.
