We also asked them what information they most needed to
improve their ability to survive,
and with the help of the local government, we provided them
through specially designed seminars.
ONE YEAR AFTER THE CATASTROPHIC EARTHQUAKE
We surveyed 411 widely dispersed households t in settlements up to a couple of hours apart up the Himalayan mountain trails. The survey was conducted in the HILL REGION of Nepal, which has "Middle Mountains" (which would be considered massive mountains anywhere else in the world) and Deep Valleys.
Some settlements were up to two hours apart up and down steep mountain trails. It was dangerous work. We had to provide life insurance for our specially trained survey teams.
As far as we know, it was the only scientifically designed survey of the survivors themselves that asked them about their actual living conditions with questions that could be directly compared to their living conditions at the time of the previous census.
We also asked the survivors how long they could continue to meet their basic needs in their current living situations and what information would help them overcome their greatest challenges.
